MY PHILOSOPHY ON TURFGRASS
The golf course should be maintained in excellent playing condition for all levels of golfers. In order to best provide these conditions, the course will be managed by practices that are integrated to address water use, nutrient input, and pest management. In addition, these practices can advance environmental protection and improve the bottom line.
Regarding water use: limited water use will provide better playing conditions for the membership. Less water will decrease the likelihood of disease outbreak and will require the turfgrass to be more self-sufficient by growing deeper, stronger, and healthier roots in order to survive. This can be achieved by primarily relying on hand-watering, wetting agent use, and irrigation system audits.
Regarding nutrients: limit amounts of nutrient inputs to provide only those necessary for healthy turfgrass. This is performed through many approaches, but will be based on soil and tissue testing.
A properly devised course set-up will create a challenging, yet interesting layout for all golfers each day. It should also highlight the design characteristics the architect intended.
